Day 134-145: Verona, Sauquoit and Upstate New York

Day 134: Weedsport to Verona Beach State Park, 52 miles
Day 135: Verona to Sauquoit, 31 miles
Day 136-145: Sauquoit, Otter Lake, Old Forge, etc...

Day 134-145: 7/24/14-8/04/14

I know, I know, I know...... I'm sorry.  I'm sorry!  IM SORRRRRRY!!!!!!!!!! But, please believe me.  This is a problem with me and my selfish ways.  Not you.  You? No, you are perfect and you know it....  I've been very bad and I do so ever apologize for my total disregard for your feelings.  But, I have been thinking about you, you sweet, sassy little blog you.  Yes, quite a bit actually in the last few days.  I'm thinking that it's time to return to you... If you'll take me back of course... I miss you.  I just want to go back to how it used to be.  Just the two of us and my thumbs caressing (I guess typing if you want to get all literal) sweet nothings onto and into you in the dark hours of the night.  Now, if you don't mind I'd like to get back to the regularly scheduled program and fill err'body in on what I've been up to and where I'm headed next!

After some long and hard days of riding with my dad for the first 6 days it was nice to get a nice easy 50-mile day in.. We left Weedsport at 8:00 a.m. and even with a nice breakfast/blog break at a McD's in the late morning hours we still got to Verona Beach State Park by about 1:00 p.m. thanks in part to a nice 15-20 m.p.h. tailwind.  We got to the park and set up our tents at a site right on the water and staked those suckers in nice and secure because the wind was really wiping off of the water.  We hung out at the site all afternoon reading and enjoying the weather.  That night we met up with my mom, sister and my sister's boyfriend and got dinner in Sylvan Beach at our favorite spot Harpoon Eddie's.

After dinner my dad and I got dropped off back at our campsite and the rest of the gang drove back home to get some sleep in beds.. We chose to stay in the tents for one more night of tent sleeping before we got back home.

In the morning they returned and we rode the last 31 miles from Verona Beach to home in Sauquoit together which was a lot of fun.  We rode the first 10 miles and then got some soda/coffee and some surprisingly delicious breakfast pizza at a SaveOn and then finished the last bit into home by 11:30 a.m.  I think we'll being seeing some tour-type riding from the female Homer-Gunther's in the future!  They've got the bug and they also made that 31 miles seem like nothing..

So I got home!  I hit my third target signifying the end of my Northern Tier riding and a little R&R for me.  I ended up staying for 10 days and they were all glorious.  I got the bike into Dick Sonne's Bike Shop to get it some much needed attention and to replace my cassette, chain, front chain ring, derailer, and throw some new tires on.. I guess putting close to 8,000 miles on the bike does some damage to its components.. But, now I've got it back and it's running as good as ever!

The rest of my week in domestication was a combination of going up to my Aunt and Uncle's cabin in Old Forge to kayak, playing golf (which I did a lot of... 81 holes in 4 days of playing), hanging out with some of my friends and family in town, eating good food and drinking good drink, a few trips to the gym to keep my bike legs going and just chilling.

It's been a great time off but, now the time has come for me to push off again and get back out on the road.  Tomorrow starts the beginning of my ride down the East Coast en route to the Keys!  I'm excited to get back out there and reunite with the road and see what the east coast will bring my way... Until the next post here is the updated stats from the trip thus far and a bunch of pics from my staycation from the vacation.

Home sweet home for some R&R...

Otter Lake, Old Forge, NY

Nice view from the front porch up at Otter Lake...  Love it up here.

Otter Lake and the kayaks after a trip around the lake.  First sunburn I get and it's while I'm home "resting".... Go figure.

Brimfield View Driving Range, Clinton, NY getting ready for my golf-filled stay at home... Figured I should do a little practicing before getting out on the real courses.

The first time I've been on a
golf course in a few years...18 holes in at Stonebridge golf course on Tuesday with my Dad and Uncle.. Not a very good showing for myself but, it was still fun.  Followed up this day with 27 holes at Woodgate golf course the next day... Shot much better and even chipped in a 70+ yard wedge to save the hole and get an 8... Okay, I didn't shoot that much better but, there were a few more moments the second day where I looked like I knew what I was doing sorta kinda a little bit.

Rooftop deck at Tony Harper's in Old Forge... Made 2 visits to this place while up at Otter Lake!

Sauquoit Knolls golf course

"The Three Amigos" reunited again and being weird as per usual...

The Annual Killabrew Scrambler Golf Fundraiser.. Our Eightsom Group for the day..

Believe it or not I got a few visits to the gym while home..

And even more crazy.. I rode the bike! I've heard if you don't "use it" you will "lose it" and I didn't want that to happen!

Day 128-133: Clyde, Mentor, Presque Isle, Evangola, Holley, Weedsport

Day 128: Ann Arbor to Clyde, OH, 94 miles
Day 129: Clyde to Mentor, OH, 106 miles
Day 130: Mentor to Presque Isle, PA, 84 miles
Day 131: Presque Isle to Evangola State Park, NY, 72 miles
Day 132: Evangola to Holley, NY, 100 miles
Day 133: Holley to Weedsport, 91 miles

Day 128: 7/18/14

After a few days off in Ann Arbor hanging with Jay and Christie my folks met up with us in town and we all walked around the Arts Fair that was going on all weekend and then ate dinner at Mani Osteria and Bar which rivaled the food at Ma Ma's Kitchen in New Roads.. This food was amazing.  The restaurant was family style so we got a whole mess of food...Calamari, some kind of fried spicy cauliflower, Caesar salad, red onion and pistachio wood fired pizza, sausage and peppers wood fired pizza and some kind of delicious pasta that I can't even describe but it was amazing!

After dinner we walked back to Jay and Christie's place, packed up my stuff, said our sad goodbyes to them and drove over to the hotel a few miles away to get some rest before getting back on the road the next morning.

In the A.M. we got some nice continental breakfast and got a few family pics, some of us shed a few tears (cough mom cough) and then my dad and I jumped on the bikes and hit the road...  We rode 55 miles from Ann Arbor through some really nice country roads and then across the state border into Toledo, Ohio and then as quickly as possible out of Toledo (it was a pretty scary, rundown town) before stopping for lunch at a Subway.  A few footlongs and some sodas and we were back on the bikes.. We rode down to Elmore, OH where we got on the North Coast Inland Trail taking us through Fremont (a nice, quant town) and then ended in Cylde, OH at a Red Roof Inn.  Nothing beats a nice Rails-to-Trails route with 20+ miles of asphalt and no cars!  Dinner consisted of a large pizza, a large salad and some beers.  Showers consisted of a nicely chlorinated pool.  Sleep in a spacious king-sized bed.

Day 129: 7/19/14

Early morning rise and another continental breakfast consisting of waffles, cereal and juice/coffee.  Rain started overnight and was still coming down as we packed up and we started out with a light sprinkle that built up to some pretty good showers throughout the morning.  We rode through Cleveland on Lakeshore Drive that ran right along Lake Erie.  We couldn't believe some of the houses on the street.  Ridiculous mansion after mansion.... Unfortunately, the weather restricted picture taking.

Once through Cleveland the rain let up for a short breather and we stopped in Euclid for a short break ourselves but, we could see the dark clouds coming in again.  As per usual my dad and I decided to jump out on the bikes figuring that we could beat the storm... Well, that didn't work!  Within a few minutes the rain turned on and this time came down in buckets...  And it was some of the hardest rain that either of us have ridden through... We ended up doing about miles more in this torrential downpour and we also got my pops his 2nd "Century Ride" finishing the day in another hotel in Mentor.  Total miles for the day 106.  After drying out we walked across the street and ate dinner at Smokey Bones Bar and Fire Grill (loaded cheese fries, burgers and beer!)

Day 130: 7/20/14

The weather finally broke by morning and we had a great day of riding.

Around midday as we were stopped for a water break on the side of the road a woman in a truck pulled along side us and yelled out her window, "Got a minute to talk?"  We obviously said yes and it turned out that she had done a cross-country bicycle trip back in 1987 herself and wanted to hear about our trip and what we were up to. If only it was later in the day we might have taken her up on her offer for showers, beds and food at her lakeshore "summer house."

We finished the night in Presque Isle, PA.  We got dinner at a cool outdoor bar/restaurant called Schickalay's on the Bay with some good eats and really spicey horse radish sauce and got to enjoy the music from the reggae festival happening in the park right next to the place.

After dinner we walked down to Sara's Campground and set up camp on the beach in the most helter skelter arrangement I've ever seen.  The beach campground had no designated spots so people just threw up tents wherever they wanted and so there were tents and canopies and all sorts of camping gear, fires, kids, people, etc.... all over the place.  It was a riot.  We popped the tents up behind a small shed to the side (the only open area) and both of us fell asleep before it was even dark.

Day 131: 7/21/14

We were in dire need of laundry after our wet first couple days so we decided to hit up a laundromat in the morning and leave a little bit later than normal from Presque Isle.  Obviously, there was also a quick visit to McDonald's in the morning before laundry and then we hit the road at 10:00 a.m.

A short morning ride and we crossed into New York, my first day back in New York since March 11th when I left Sauquoit in the car en route to St. Augustine (feels like a looooong time ago). I had the big man snap the pic of me in front of the New York sign (much easier than doing timed selfies which I've been forced to do for much of the country).

A few miles down the road in New York we stopped for a drink and a snack at a local convenience store/gas station where we encountered Miss "Friendly" the "Friendliest Friendly" clerk I've encountered on the trip.  I.e. She was not friendly.  Only 2 highlights... She scolded a woman for walking into the store with a bathing suit top on and shorts... Mind you we are right on Lake Erie... Then I asked to fill up my water bottles from the fountain soda machine and she said that I couldn't claiming that she just could not allow it as she would face some very serious health code violations.... Just such a friendly, warm, splendid woman.  So forward thinking...

We got to Evangola State Park at a little after 5:00 p.m. completing another really good day of riding.  The park, although somewhat limited in its services, was really nice.  We took another "shower" in Lake Erie on some rather sharp rocks that we barely managed to walk on and then got a large pizza, a salad and a 2 liter bottle of Diet Pepsi delivered to our campsite.  Yep, we got delivery to a state park campsite.  And it was glorious. We housed all the food and most of the soda and chilled out around our campsite and firepit that we had to avoid the bugs.  We also had a few brief, almost legible conversations with our crazy Russian neighbors who no joke were swigging some kind of clear liquor that we could only assume was vodka... They were amazed that we could fit in our tiny little tents and kept coming over to look at them in awe. (Jay, Kara, Dan... It was close to the little, itty, bitty tent moment from our last trip)

Day 132: 7/22/14

This day was really hot and felt really long.  We were on the bikes at 6:30 a.m. and got to Holley, after a 100-mile ride, at  5:30 p.m.  We rode through Buffalo earlier in the day and through the outer suburbs that proved to be pretty mentally taxing as we had to deal with lots of traffic, bad roads and the 90 degree temperatures...  Small piece of advice.. Avoid Cheektowaga at all costs!  The epitome of suburban sprawl! Disgusting!

In Lockport we got on the Erie Canal Trail and rode the crushed stone path the last 35 miles of the day.  It was nice to be away from traffic but you definitely work much harder trail riding than on pavement.

By the end of the day we were both feeling the exhaustion of a long, hot day and we had a giant feast at a local diner in Holley before returning to the local park to pop the tents and sleep.  The only problem with our free sleeping arrangement for the night was the constant flow of people and noises that we had  to deal with through the entire night.  And it really did continue for the entire night... Affecting some of us more than others.. I slept quite well, despite the noises, and was informed by my dad in the morning that we'd been visited by a curious police car during the night.  News to me.

Day 133: 7/23/14

On the bikes again at 6:30 a.m. As is always the case with my father (and I'm sure my mother and sister would agree) he claimed that our "little morning ride" to breakfast would be really easy without any food... Well, some 20 miles later and no breakfast spot in sight I pleaded with him to stop so I could eat a few piece of beef jerky to hold me over until we eventually stopped.  Luckily, that was enough and I made it to mile 32 where we stopped for sodas and breakfast at Bruegger's Bagels in Pittsford.

Like the day outside of Cleveland, we again saw the storm clouds gathering and again thought that we could outrun them.  So we jumped back on the bikes and tore down route 31 eastward hoping that we could stay in front of the clouds.

We ended up getting another 40 miles in and just barely tucked under an awning at Dave's Convenience Store in Savannah when the storm finally reached us and it was torrential again just like the other day!  Victory to us because we beat the storm this day!  It was much nicer watching the storm from a nice dry place as we are rather delicious convenience store burgers, sodas and chocolate milks.

Less than an hour of eating and hiding out at Dave's and the storm was over and we finished the last 20 miles into a motel in Weedsport.  Another solid day.  Typical night on the road... Arby's takeout, beer, chocolate and an early bedtime (one of us fell asleep at 8:00 p.m......)

Day 121-124: Milwaukee, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor

Day 121: Milwaukee, 0 miles
Day 122: Milwaukee to Grand Rapids, 50 miles
Day 123: Grand Rapids to Lansing, 63 miles
Day 124: Lansing to Ann Arbor, 73 miles

Day 121: 7/11/14

My Milwaukee adventures included a tour at Clock Shadow Creamery with cheese curds so fresh they squeaked in your mouth as you chewed them,  ride through the Arts District and Brady Street (a famous street for bars/restaurants/shops), some huge slices of pizza at Ian's Pizza (a Madison/Milwaukee stay), and a tour at the Lakefront Brewing Company ($7 included 4 6oz. pours and a free Lakefront Brewing Glass).  Called it an early night before my 6:00 a.m. ferry ride across the Michigan to Muskegon, Michigan and East Coast Standard Time again!

Day 122: 7/12/14

Up at 4:45 a.m. Got my gear together and packed up the bike and just as I was about to leave I check the front tire and it is flat!  Quickly pull out my little hand pump and frantically pump it up hoping the pressure will be able to hold for my 3 mile jaunt to the port... Thoughts of a late arrival where the ferry is pulling away and I tear through the security checkpoint without stopping and the guards running after me race through my mind with each grueling blast of air I desperately push into my poor ailing tire.  PUMP, PUMP, PUMP, check tire still squishy, PUMP, PUMP... I go up onto the 15% graded ramp that is already seperated from the departing ferry at 45 m.p.h.
and fly off the raised edge 50 feet over the snapping jaws of none other than the actual JAWS, who contrary to popular belief didn't die in the movies and retired to his home in Lake Michigan not being able to take the celebrity and fame he'd attracted in his heyday, and land to a skidding stop into the crew member who just happened to be a former Miss Wisconsin herself and a bike-enthusiast at that and we marry and live happily ever after.... PUMP, PUMP, PUMP, check.....????? And the pressure is finally up!  I can ride!  I make it down to the port without further problem and my romantic dillusions of grandeur and my great escape from the Port of Wisconsin are thwarted. Another time....

Got off in Muskegon and hopped on the Muskettawa Trail and rode that most of the way into Grand Rapids. In Grand Rapids I stayed with Meghan and Alex and their awesome little kid Max and it ended up being a really great night hanging out with them.

Day 123: 7/13/14

From Grand Rapids I had a 63 mile ride to get to Lansing.  I also was sure to arrive there by 3:00 p.m. so I could get to a bar for lunch/watch the Germany v. Argentina game.

After the game I rode the last few miles to  meet Emily and Greg, two young professionals living and working in the area and we went out for dinner and got some delicious burgers and beers near Michigan State University, after my guided tour through the giant campus (of which they both attended and where Greg currently works).  After dinner we hit up another bar where we got some 24 oz. beers for $1.50.  Got to love college towns...  After a few of these bad boys we were all ready to go home and crash... Some people had work in the morning.

Day 124: 7/14/14

After an awesome omelet made by Emily and some coffee I headed out on the bike and rode straight through to Ann Arbor to my college friend/former teammate/fellow '08 XC bike trip compatriot, J. Keil and his fantastic girlfriend Christie's house where I'll be spending the next few days hanging out with them.

After a few days of chilling here with Jay and Christie I will be meeting back up with the family and riding the next 500-600 miles back home with my pops.

Until then I'll be enjoying some days off and seeing what's up in Ann Arbor!
